RMT general secretary Mick Cash said:
"It is total nonsense for Northern Rail to claim that RMT walked away from the talks and we expect them to issue an immediate correction.
"It does neither staff nor the public any favours when the company dashes to the press with wholly bogus statements which only destabilise an already difficult situation.
"For the record RMT remains committed to a negotiated settlement that protects public safety on Northern trains. Any claims to the contrary are a lie."
