RMT Press Office:
RMT responds to announcement on rail improvement works in the North of England as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade.
Commenting on the announcement that rail improvement works will be carried out in the North of England this summer as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said:
“RMT welcomes the announcement that rail improvement works will be carried out in the North of England this summer. However, given that the Government recently slashed £1 billion from the Network Rail budget, it is essential that the UK’s existing programme of renewals, upgrades and enhancements is protected and implemented.
“This will be vital as part of our green economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and to ensure that the rail network can continue to provide an effective and reliable service.
“It also seems counterproductive that this announcement comes on the back of significant funding cuts to the Transport for the North (TfN) budget. If the Government is serious about its ‘levelling up’ agenda then it must commit to reverse these damaging cuts to TfN.”
Ends.
