RMT Press Office:
Trade unionists and the wider community will hold a protest at Larne port this afternoon, over safety fears of P&O vessels.
This week the European Causeway drifted for hours in waters off Larne having lost power and had to be escorted back by tugboats.
The vessel was carrying passengers, freight traffic and was being operated by an underpaid, overworked and poorly trained agency crew.
Numerous safety failures on P&O vessels have prompted widespread concerns that their ships are unsafe to sail.
RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "Today's Larne port protest demonstrates the anger and worry about P&O ships being allowed to sail in UK waters.
"It is a disgrace that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has refused to take the action necessary to keep passengers safe and take over the running of all P&O vessels.
"RMT will continue our Fair Ferries campaign, to set union standards of pay and working conditions and to prevent a repeat of the P&O debacle in the future."
