RMT Press Office:
Maritime union RMT today pays tribute to the 193 crew and passengers who lost their lives when the Herald of Free Enterprise capsized off Zeebrugge on 6 March 1987.
Marking the 38th anniversary of the tragedy, RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said:
“On this solemn anniversary, we remember the 193 crew and passengers who tragically lost their lives in the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster.
"Our thoughts are with their families and the Dover community, who continue to feel the impact of this avoidable tragedy.
“The Herald of Free Enterprise disaster highlighted the importance of robust maritime safety standards—standards that must never be compromised.
"However, the industry continues to face a race to the bottom, exemplified by P&O Ferries’ appalling decision to sack its entire British seafaring workforce three years ago.
“RMT remains resolute in defending safety standards for all seafarers and passengers using Channel ferry services.
"Wherever rogue employers attempt to undermine safety, we will take action to protect our members' terms and conditions at work."
