RMT Press Office:
Responding to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps who delivered today’s daily Government briefing RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said:
“Grant Shapps saying “it’s our civic duty to avoid using public transport” is a disgraceful way to shift the blame onto workers who have been left with little choice but to use public transport when it is his Government’s responsibility to ensure the safety of passengers and transport workers.
"The confusing, contradictory and potentially lethal approach from government which says on the one hand when we go outside our homes into open spaces two meter social distancing must be maintained at all times but then on the other hand the government is not lifting a finger to prevent the cramming of passengers into confined spaces on bus, train and tube services.
"The Government needs to urgently launch a new deal for transport that puts the safety of the public and transport workers first, boosts public investment and the public ownership of our transport networks”
