RMT responds to Government loan to fund Crossrail and renews calls on Government to stop treating TfL like a political football

RAIL UNION RMT today responded to reports that the Government had loaned Transport for London £850 million to complete the Crossrail project, following negotiations, by calling for London’s Transport and its vital infrastructure projects to be put on a stable financial basis instead of the life-support it is forced to exist on as part of the Government’s “disgraceful” political campaign to influence the Capital’s 2021 Mayoral elections.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said;

“Yet again this Government is using London’s transport and its vital infrastructure projects as a political football and essentially holding transport workers and passengers to ransom as we approach the 2021 Mayoral elections.

“Instead of a series of last minute emergency loans that go to the wire, the Government must put TfL’s funding on a stable basis for the future as part of a coherent transport strategy. RMT will simply not tolerate this government playing with the livelihoods of thousands of our members.”

Ends.
