RMT Press Office:

RMT responds to ludicrous claims from Northern Rail boss David Brown that union is refusing talks in guards' dispute

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said;

"It is total nonsense to suggest that RMT is blocking talks. Every effort we have made to get negotiations going with Northern has been kicked back in our faces.

"The company are only prepared to to talk about the axing of safety critical staff from over half of Northern Rail services. They are not prepared to negotiate around the issue of the guard guarantee that has been the basis of settlements across Wales, Scotland and franchises in other parts of England.

"With the shocking BTP figures out today showing a huge surge in violence on the railway Northern Rail bosses should be thoroughly ashamed of their plans to give the criminals a green light by axing guards on over ‎half their services. Those dangerous, profit-driven plans should be halted immediately.

"RMT will not compromise on the issue of safety, access and security on Northern Rail and that is what the action this Saturday is all about. The company know that and should stop setting ludicrous pre conditions and start talking seriously. "
