RMT responds to Partick McLoughlin’s attack on the union at the Tory Party conference.

Mick Cash, RMT General Secretary, said:

“RMT is delighted that Patrick McLoughlin is running scared of this union’s high profile and successful campaign to keep the East Coast Mainline in public hands.

“RMT always said that the plan to re-privatise the East Coast, after two private sector failures and a public sector rescue mission when National Express threw the keys back, was based on pure right-wing ideology and Patrick McLoughlin has confirmed that to the Tory conference today.

“The minister, and his party and his Lib Dem allies, are taking the British people for mugs. They know that the East Coast is the most successful rail route in the country, delivering over a billion pounds back to the taxpayer while the private train companies just bleed us dry.

“The fight to keep East Coast public, and for the renationalisation of the rest of our railways, will be a major issue right up to and beyond next year’s general election.”
