RMT Press Office:
RMT seeks agreement to address Transport For The North Board tomorrow to present union case on threat to guards
RAIL UNION RMT confirmed today that it has written to Transport for the North seeking permission to address their full board meeting in Manchester tomorrow - 28th June - to present the union case for retaining safety-critical guards on Northern Rail services.
The board meeting will be attended by Transport Minister Jo Johnson along with Mayors and senior councillors and officials from across the North.
RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said;
"I have written to John Cridland from Transport for the North seeking permission for RMT to address the full board meeting on the key issue of guards and the threat to passenger safety.
"With the continuing problems on the Northern franchise it is important that the devolved transport authority hear the staff case for the guard guarantee and are given an opportunity to understand why the union remains in dispute with Arriva Rail North.
"Devolved transport bodies in Wales and Scotland have played a key role in underpinning the guard guarantee and we see no reason why the North of England should be any different."
