RMT slams Elizabeth Line ticket office closure plan

5 September 2025

RMT Press Office:

RMT today blasted plans by the Elizabeth Line to close every ticket office by August 2027, calling the move “a betrayal of station staff and passengers” with a vow of sustained industrial action to stop it.

The union said the proposal comes just months after a mass outcry forced the previous government to abandon similar ticket office closure plans across the rail network.

The information came to light when the union were given sight of unredacted documents signalling that the ticket offices would be earmarked for closure by 2027.

Elizabeth line services are operated by GTS Rail Operations under a concession from Transport for London (TfL).

RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey said: “After the biggest wave of public opposition we’ve seen in years to ticket office closures, it’s beyond belief that similar plans are being put back on the table for the Elizabeth Line.

“Against the backdrop of industrial relations chaos across TfL, this reckless move is like pouring petrol on the fire.

“These offices are vital for thousands of passengers, especially disabled and vulnerable people who depend on face-to-face services.

“If this decision is not immediately rescinded we will trigger an immediate dispute on the Elizabeth Line with a view to taking sustained industrial action and launching a mass public campaign.

“The public’s views were made crystal clear in the railway ticket office consultation, yet TfL is pressing ahead with a mass campaign of closures that repeats the Tories’ madcap, failed plans.

“We are demanding that the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and TfL step in to prevent these closures from taking place.”
