RMT Press Office:
RMT slams "ludicrous" Competition and Markets Authority report on rail franchising which calls for more privatisation.
RAIL UNION RMT today branded the Competition and Markets Authority “ludicrous” after the organisation launched a new report calling for rail franchising to be “overhauled” and replaced by multiple private operators running services on the same lines.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash said:
“The idea that the solution to the profiteering and fragmentation that has wrecked Britain’s railways over the past two decades is more privatisation is frankly ludicrous and just exposes the Competitions and Markets Authority as wholly unfit for purpose.
“Opening up the lucrative routes to some kind of Wild West free-for-all where the bandit capitalists slug it out station by station, track by track would reduce what is left of our rail network to deregulated and dangerous chaos.
“The only solution, and the one supported by the vast majority of the British people, is a return to public ownership of our railways with the whole stinking shambles of franchising and privatisation swept away for good.”
