RMT suspends Avanti strikes following new offer

27 February 2025

RMT Press Office:

RMT has suspended planned strike action in the Avanti Train Managers dispute following a new offer from the company.

Strikes scheduled for 9 and 16 March  will not go ahead while members vote on the deal in a referendum.

The new offer includes key gains won by RMT:
  • Pay rates will increase to time plus a quarter, and time plus a half for Saturdays and Sundays.
  • The minimum shift payment will also rise from 6 hours to 7 and a half hours.
  • A new "Order of Call" will ensure spare and rest day shifts are allocated fairly, prioritising Train Managers before senior management grades are called upon to step in.
  • Avanti West Coast has agreed to meet with us ahead of the December 2025 timetable to assess the impact of these changes and make any necessary improvements.
  • The enhanced rest day working payments will be backdated to 10 February 2025.
While RMT is suspending industrial action, the union remains in dispute until the referendum is concluded.

Mick Lynch, RMT General Secretary, said: "We have fought hard to secure a better deal, and now it’s over to the members to decide. While we have suspended the upcoming strikes to allow for a democratic vote, we remain in dispute until that process is complete."
