RMT Press Office:

RMT to meet South Western Railway and Northern Rail today in last ditch talks over guards' safety dispute

Rail union RMT will be meeting with senior managers from South Western Railway and Northern Rail today – 3rd January - in last ditch talks aimed at brokering a solution to the guards’ safety dispute with the next phase of three days of action next week starting on Monday.

The union also confirmed today that proposed talks with Southern Rail,  where a dispute has been on-going for over 20 months, have collapsed after the company unilaterally decided to walk away.

RMT continues to press for genuine and meaningful talks in the disputes over guards and safety on Merseyrail and Greater Anglia.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said:
“RMT will enter the talks with South Western Railway and Northern Rail in good faith and seeking an agreement which guarantees a guard on their trains and protects the safety, security and access of the travelling public. If we can secure that kind of agreement in Scotland and Wales there is no reason at all why we cany do the same in England.

“The union is angry and frustrated that our efforts to get talks back underway with Southern Rail over twenty months into our dispute with the company have been kicked back in our faces when it looked like we were making some progress.

“RMT will continue to press all of the rail companies for genuine and meaningful talks in all of the separate disputes over safety and the role of the guard.”
