RMT Press Office:
On eve of Northern and Merseyrail strikes RMT welcomes Jeremy Corbyn’s backing for campaign to keep guards on trains
RMT has welcomed the backing of Jeremy Corbyn in the campaign to keep the guard on our trains.
The Labour leader today retweeted the RMT film “Unguarded”, which makes the case for a safe secure and accessible railway based on the feedback from passengers.
In tweeting the film Jeremy Corbyn said;
“This @RMTunion film shows why it is essential to keep guards on our trains. Please share and support this important campaign. #KeepTheGuardOnTheTrain”

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said;
“We welcome this support from the Labour leader. RMT members are making a principled stand for safety and Jeremy Corbyn recognises that.
“Labour have already made clear that it is their policy to oppose driver only operation and passengers are with us all the way in the campaign to keep the guard.
“The rail companies and their political bosses should take note and get around the table negotiate a deal similar to the ones the union has already secured in Scotland and Wales.”
