RMT general secretary Mick Lynch will be handing out leaflets and postcards tomorrow (Wednesday August 9) outside Penzance train station at 9 am as part of the union’s nationwide day of action to stop ticket office closures.
The union has called two days of action this month for tomorrow and August 16 after the government extended the flawed consultation process to September due to the sheer scale of public support for RMT’s campaign.
RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said the public knew that closing railway ticket offices will make the network less safe, secure and accessible and this is part of the government and rail companies’ plans to de-staff the railway.
“Together we need to mobilise to defeat these plans which are part of the Tory government’s agenda of dehumanising the railway on behalf of the private operators and their shareholder.
“If Transport Focus and London Travelwatch do object to ticket office closures next month, then the decision will go to the Transport Secretary, and at this point there would be a renewed campaign to put the pressure directly on the Transport Secretary Mark Harper to keep ticket offices open,” he said.
