On second day of latest phase of rock-solid Merseyrail strike action over safety-critical guards RMT repeats demand to Labour politicians "Which side are you on?"
General Secretary Mick Cash said;
"Politicians on Merseyside have no mandate for driver only trains. They need to make a clear decision, are they on the side of the safety-critical guards and the travelling public or are they on the side of the rip-off private rail companies?
"RMT welcomes the fantastic and broad support we have had from Labour MPs from all wings of the party in Merseyside and constituency parties who are on the side of Labour Party policy to oppose driver only trains.
"But unfortunately some of the mayors transport advisers have clearly got a long standing and close relationship with Dutch state owned Merseyrail who stand to make a fortune out of the sacking of guards.
"RMT would point out that there was no mandate in the Metro Mayor manifesto to introduce driver only trains which means the Mayor is free to bring his own fresh thinking to this dispute and demonstrate he is on the side of workers and passengers and not the greedy privateers."
