Study reveals heart breaking rail fares for Valentine breaks

Study reveals heart breaking rail fares for Valentine breaks

14 February 2017

RMT Press Office:

Research undertaken by rail union RMT has found that a couple booking a trip away for Valentine’s Day (departing 13th Feb and returning 15th Feb) could fly to a choice of major European cities for substantiality less than the cost of travelling by pre-booked trains from London to UK destinations.

For example to fly to Paris is less than half the price (£258 return) than to take the Eurostar (£606).

It’s cheaper (less the half the price) to get return flights from London to Switzerland (£148) than it is to get pre-booked return train tickets from London to the Scottish Highlands (£331).

When measured by kilometre the difference in prices is even more staggering. It is almost 7 times cheaper, by cost per km, for return flights to Bordeaux in the south of France (£90) than it is to get return train tickets to Paris (£606).

A flight to Prague or Budapest would cost 75% less per kilometre than a trip from London to the Lake District by train.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said:

“Rip off rail fares are heart breaking for couples who want a Valentine’s break by rail in the UK. It is scandalous that Britain’s private rail companies are being given a free run by the Government to charge these rip-off fares.

“Because it’s cheaper to fly than go by train the Tories love affair with rail privatisation and sky high rail fares is not only bad news for our environment but is disastrous for the UK’s tourist industry and the economy as a whole.”
